Nor'easter is a chilling experience here in Vermont

Oh baby, it's cold outside
A big Nor'easter snow storm hit today. Didn't risk going outside with the camera but managed to snap this amazing digital photo of my Houston hubby.

Christmas goodies 2010

My little sister makes some of the best cookies and candies around. These are some samplings from Christmas 2010. Yummy! Sometimes the simplest things make the best subjects for a photograph.

Our local volunteer fire department is a hub of activity

Ever wonder what goes on at your local volunteer fire department? Our Wallingford Volunteer Fire Department (WVFD) is a hub of activity year round. Training is done in all sorts of weather and conditions. It is not an easy job and, if you can, volunteer some time or donate money to help your fire department provide fire coverage to the citizens in your town. Our volunteer fire department is also one of my favorite subjects to photograph. I admire the strength, courage and stamina of these firefighters, young and old, and I'm fascinated with the long tradition of dedication and selflessness these men and women show for their calling.

My favorite cowboy

My favorite cowboy
This black and white photo was taken with a 35 mm camera in the late 1970's. It is one of my all time favorite photographs. It was a result of an assignment for a photography class I was taking at the time. I was learning to develop my own film in the dark room so I needed to shoot with black and white. My dad posed for this photo while standing inside his old truck just at the top of the tailgate during a gymkhana. He was always a willing subject and one of my favorite people to photograph. The fly on his hat was just along for the ride.

Raven's watch in Old Bennington
This is the cemetery in Old Bennington, Vermont where Robert Frost is buried. The raven in the last photo watched me nearly the entire time I was there as though it were sentinel for those who slept peacefully beneath the sod.

Young girl and her horse on a knoll

Young girl and her horse on a knoll
This photo was taken in the late 1970's with a 35mm camera. It was then scanned and digitized to make it appear as a painting. My sister posed for this photo with her horse 'Misty' and this has always been one of my favorite composition portrait photos. I took this photo on the knoll behind our old farm.

There are angels among us

There are angels among us
One of my favorite subjects to photograph is cemeteries. I love the stone carvings, the muted gray colors of the headstones and the connection to long lost lives. On a cemetery headstone you read names of people you knew, people you never met and people you've heard of but never met. When a headstone is preserved in a photograph it's almost like preserving that person for all eternity. This beautiful grave stone is in our town cemetery. It was photographed May 25, 2009 during a Memorial Day ceremony.

Young moose on the road

Young moose on the road
This young moose was in my yard on May 15, 2009. By the time I got my digital camera out he had already meandered up the road a few yards when I took this photo. We get moose in our yard quite often and it's always exciting to see them.

Abandoned hippie van and old bus

Abandoned hippie van
This vintage VW van was discovered in the back yard of an old Vermont estate.

Seen better days
This old bus was not totally abandoned because it was actually being used for storage and held a goodly amount of antiques. It was found in the same back yard as the vintage VW van which was only full of weeds.

Grandma's old house and former Mt. Holly post office

The former Mt. Holly, VT post office and grandma's old house

This old house was my grandma's home for awhile and was the Mt. Holly, Vermont, post office for many years before that. It no longer exists even in its dilapidated condition. It was torn down several years ago. I remember having Sunday dinners there with her after church. The church was just around the corner and it, too, no longer exists because it burned down a few years ago. I managed to take these photos of the old house just before it was demolished.

Meet Oreo

Portrait of a kitten
This little black and white fellow is named Oreo. He was born in May 2010. His mama had a litter of six kittens and hid them in the woods under an old fallen pine tree.

Heirloom roses from the old farm

When the old homestead was torn down two years ago my mom, sister and I were there to see the demolition. At the end of the foundation my mom's old rose bush still stood. It was dug up, brought home and replanted at the corner of my house and has bloomed each year since. This digital photo was taken in the summer of 2010.
