Remembering and honoring their sacrifice

On this and each Memorial Day we remember and honor the men and women in our military who gave everything they had. We can honor and remember their sacrifice by memorizing our United States Constitution. We Americans need to swear to uphold and defend it as these fallen soldiers did. If it is the only thing you do for the rest of your life to honor their memory then their sacrifice will not have been in vain.

Cemetery in Old Bennington, Vermont

Raven's watch in Old Bennington
This is the cemetery in Old Bennington, Vermont where Robert Frost is buried. The raven in the last photo watched me nearly the entire time I was there as though it were sentinel for those who slept peacefully beneath the sod.

One of my favorite subjects to photograph is cemeteries. I love the stone carvings, the muted gray colors of the headstones and the connection to long lost lives. On a cemetery headstone you read names of people you knew, people you never met and people you've heard of but never met. When a headstone is preserved in a photograph it's almost like preserving that person for all eternity. This beautiful grave stone is in our town cemetery. It was photographed May 25, 2009 during a Memorial Day ceremony.
